Understanding

8/19/97 (5:10am)

I once strode paths I did not know,
searching for the meaning of my existence,
yet all along the length of that journey
I never moved beyond the first step.

I tried to comprehend the everything
with the full scope of the nothing,
yet all within the depth of that searching
I never came to know the full scope.

How could I stand so proudly
within the limitation of a room
and claim to know the truth within it
when I couldn't see the room's own container?

No matter how large my brain might grow,
it would never leap beyond its physicality,
and I would never leave the confines of knowing
until I turned it all over to Him.

My understanding is no greater
than the sands of an hour glass,
but His Understanding is as a rock
on which we all may solidly stand.

Count me to no lengthy measure

8/22/97 (11:33pm)

Do not count me
as one of a power beyond strength,
for left to my own
I would surely wither as a parched weed.

Do not measure me
by a yardstick of purity
when by that length
I would scarcely touch the first inch.

I rest heavy in the labor
of that which should be without labor.
Without excuse, I journey
often relying on my strength (in lacking measure).

I am but a river
stumbling all over itself to get where it's going.
Without The Lord
I would decrease to an evaporation.

You see, the point is:
I can not do the things I do
nor write the verses found in this Home Page
but for the measure of The Lord indwelling me.

I Married a Treasure

8/26/97 (4:44am)
(NOTE: I am not married. I wrote this after receiving an E-Mail card from a friend.
When I went to pick it up, I noticed that the server it was on was holding a contest.
I decided to enter, but my works were not what they were looking for. So, I wrote this.
They use the material sent to them in their cards; people can choose a poem from the list,
and send that poem, along with a personal note, to someone they know. I hope they enjoy this one.)

In the midst of this cold world
you cause me warmth
and paint me smiling
in a giddy joy.

You can soothe my heart
with the simplest touch,
take me to passion
with the slightest hold,
calm me quickly
with a well placed word;
our marriage
is more precious even than gold.

Though the world is cold as winter
you keep me in Spring
and paint me forever
in a budding joy.

I didn't marry a person
with just wonderful eyes,
but a lifetime of love,
and a treasure, a prize.

More than time, and less

8/27/97 (12:45am)
(I wrote this in reaction to movies that cause so many to mourn
the passage of time and the fading of old memories.)

Time brings us on and on and on
and into one more new day,
and we watch in painful silence
as the moments slip away.

Memories beg us not to go.
Time puts hooks in our hearts
then tugs at us every step of the leaving,
while tomorrow and yesterday rip us apart.

but the pain isn't that tomorrow hasn't yet arrived,
nor that yesterday fades into emptiness,
but that this world has so many ways
to strap us captive in this nothingness.

The Lord offers to bring us
up to a better way of being
where nothing tugs, nor stings, nor pains
for The Lord is far more than breathing.
